Sweet Mango Chutney is a sweet, savory, and spicy chutney that can be served as a side with dosa, idli, or even plain rice. It is a Mangalorean recipe and is known as Kuku Dha Chutney in my native language of Tulu.

Kuku translates to Mango in Tulu. KuKu Dha Chutney is popular when fresh mangoes are in season. I love making this recipe in the summertime. I don’t know how many people make or are even aware of this chutney outside of Mangalore, but it is one of the Mango chutney recipes made exclusively in the Bunts community.
What is the best kind of Mango to Sweet Mango Chutney
The best kind of mango to use for Sweet Mango Chutney is a ripe mango. This chutney needs to be sweet and that is why it is very important to use ripe mango. I use the Kent variety of mango which is easily available in most stores in NJ during summertime.
Which Indian Variety of Mango would you compare with Kent Mango
I would say that the Kent variety of mango is similar to the Indian Totapuri variety of mangoes. It has the tartness of the Totapuri mango when medium ripe. The only visible difference between the two is Kent mango is rounder while Totapuri is longer and tapered.
Ingredients for Mango Chutney
- 1 cup fresh mango (de-seeded, roughly cut into pieces)
- 1 cup fresh shredded coconut
- 4 – 5 red dry chilis
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- salt to taste
Preparations for Sweet Mango Chutney
- Roast the dry chilis and mustard seeds separately for a couple of seconds and set it aside when done.
- Lightly roast the coconut if you are using frozen coconut otherwise, skip this step (Check out the video for more information).
- Blend the coconut, red dry chilis, mustard seeds, and salt to a fine paste
- Add the mangopieces into the blender and blend again for a couple of seconds until done.
- Serve it with rice, dosa, or idli on the side.
This recipe is easy and quick to make. Even though the ingredients are minimal, they pack a punch and you end up with the most tasteful, sweet, savory as well as spicy mango chutney. The recipe is so easy to make that you don’t need any step by step pictures either. If you still need help to make it, you can check out my video which I have included in the recipe card below.
