Today has been one of the most frustrating day for me. I was trying to curl TEE’s hair and it took me about two hours to get it done. Before I tell you about my frustration, I think it is important to disclose the need to curl TEE’s hair. You see TEE is preforming in a musical – “EVITA”, which is being hosted by our Township Cultural Arts Commission. She had to audition and was selected for a child part in ensemble cast.
This is the first time she is in a musical/play and she is very excited to be in it. Even though she does not have a solo or speaking part, as a member of the ensemble cast she needs her appearance perfectly in sync with the main characters. She plays the character of a poor/underprivileged child and the musical director wanted her hair in curls.
Now it is easier said than done. As you can see in the picture below TEE has very, very straight and thick hair, which ends up being very difficult to style. So yesterday we went hunting for rollers. I bought these Conair Brush Rollers. Usually before I buy anything I try to read up the reviews, but since I did not have time, I just ended up purchasing it.
This morning after she had a shower and had semi-dried her hair, I used one big roller on a very thin section of her hair. Immediately I realized this roller is not going to work on her hair. Once the hair was in the roller it was supposed to pinned with a plastic pushpin. Unfortunately this push pin could not hold the roller in place. I tried it in every different way to pin it, but nothing worked. To make matters worse removing the roller from the hair was very painful for TEE. As the name suggest these brush rollers are designed with small nylon brush sticking out from them. These bristles ended up tangling up her hair. I checked up on YouTube to see if I was doing it right way and found out these curlers don’t work like they have been advertised. So I know TEE and I were not the only one experiencing difficulties with this product.
Finally, I gave up and decided to use the regular curl iron which took me about 2 hours to finish up TEE’s hair. Even then she ended up with wavy hair instead of tight curls. Applying curling mousse before using the iron seemed to help a bit but not much.
As for the Conair Brush Rollers, I will be returning them. I am still in search for some good curling rollers. What do you suggest?

Been using brush rollers since I borrowed grandma’s as a kid. Easy to use, amazing results and I have super thick, dry/coarse, curly hair. Helps control the curl and frizz. Love these.

Jamie, I am glad you have a positive experience with brush rollers. However, my daughter has straight and thick hair and these rollers did not work on her hair.

Thanks for this review. I have seen similar curlers at Sally’s and was going to buy them. I have short thick hair so I’m sure these would be a mess for me to use. I will look into something else. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I wouldn’t want rollers that tangle either. I’ve never used them before though, so I’m not sure what to expect.

I think my 87 year old grandmother uses those to keep her permed curls tight while she sleeps! I say hot curlers!

I wonder if you need smaller rollers because her hair is thick? Maybe try what seems like too small to see if it holds better?

We had the opposite problem. DD has naturally curly hair. So we are on the look out for good products to straighten it. Hope you find something that works.
Tess
I try to use curlers whenever I can. I think they might be a bit better on your hair then curling iron.
Lady Lilith
Neat. The difference is amazing. You look great with a little wave.

I’ve heard that the heat and twist rollers that they use in pageants are really good. I have thick hair and, although it is already naturally wavy, I also struggle to find products that work well on my hair.
Veronica
Her hair turned out great! So full and lovely

I would be disappointed to if it doesn’t look the way you wanted it to. I usually use hot rollers on my hair and the ones I have are Conair.
Dawn
Some Conair products can be better than expected! I’m sorry that these didn’t work out for you. I find curlers to be quite hard to use, so I always use a curling iron.
Pam
Congratulations to your daughter for getting a part in the musical. Very cool. What beautiful hair! I love how it turned out with the curling iron even though it wasn’t as tight as you wanted it. I have not used rollers since I was a little kid so I have no clue what to recommend.

We use the ones with the alligator clip things that go on them. Otherwise, I’ve seen a lot of tutorials on Pinterest.

the right lady that’s me just landed on your blog. I lived in Toronto and I was a hair stylist apprentice working under a celb hair stylist. revlon curling wand, and lot’s of hair curling gel and spray and your all set.

I used to use hot rollers when my hair was long or a curling iron.
coolchillmom
well, you have great hair to begin with, so shiny and full.
but the rollers gave an amazing wave that looks very natural

When I was younger, I had to sleep in foam rollers to get my hair curly for dance. My mom always used a bandana to help keep them in place and in the morning when we styled my hair, we used a lot of hairspray.
Annie
I have a difficult time getting my hair to curl as well. My friend had those curlers that you warm up & then put in. Those worked well for my hair & then a ton of hairspray lol
krystalskitsch
I haven’t used rollers in so long, looks beautiful!
Heather
I love how your hair came out. The only curlers that work on my hair are the ones that you pre-heat.
Kay Adeola
I have never used any so to be honest I would not be much help sorry.
Robin (Masshole Mommy)
I pay a small fortune to get rid of my natural curls, so I really can’t help ya with rollers, my friend. Sorry they didn’t work.
LifeAsAConvert
I like the look these gave. I don’t use these kind of curlers though.
Jaime
I love the wavy look, but I could not deal with the pain that you’ve described. When I was younger, my mom used foam rollers on my hair. They were fantastic (and pain-free!)

It’s funny because my 7 year old just found some cushion rollers and it playing with them. I wonder if she can get them to work. I’ve never been an expert. My mom used to use them and sit under a hair dryer!
