Milk Peda is a popular Indian sweet treat made traditionally with milk, sugar, cardamom, and ghee. It is a soft, fudge like sweet made during important Indian festivals.
About the Recipe
Traditionally, it takes a long time to make peda. First, milk is boiled and reduced. Ghee, sugar and cardamom are added and it is cooked until all the liquid has evaporated and you are left with a soft dough. This dough is then broken up into smaller balls and shaped into oval, bite-size pieces.
Since I don’t have the luxury of time, I prefer to make milk peda with milk powder as it is quicker, easier and convenient to make. It is one of my kids’ favorite sweets to eat and I love to make it for them because of its ease and convenience
I also like to make it for different occasions. I make this peda for Ganesh Chaturthi as prasad (offering). During Diwali I make it to give it out as gifts to family and friends.

Ingredients for Milk Peda
Milk Powder: is the most important ingredient for this recipe. Milk powder, also known as mava powder, is easily available in Indian stores and Amazon. For this recipe I would recommend using fine milk powder.
Ghee: is a healthy fat that is added to this peda for its unique, nutty aroma and taste. I personally don’t like store bought ghee, so I make my own ghee. You can check out the recipe for homemade ghee and ghee in Instant Pot over here. It is easy to make it at home.
Sugar: is used to sweeten this treat. Indian sweets are overly sweet. You can adjust it as per your taste.
Cardamom powder: is a must for that fragrant flavoring of any Indian sweet. I use whole cardamom which I then crush and make a powder. However, you can use store-bought cardamom powder as well.
Milk: is used to add moisture as well as flavor the milk powder more. I use whole milk, however you can use 2% milk as well.

How to Make Milk Peda
This recipe for milk peda is very easy to make. It is a no-brainer and I don’t think it needs step-by-step pictures. However, if you still want to see how it is done, check out my Youtube video or see the recipe card below.
- Boil milk in a non-stick pan. Add ghee and stir it for a few seconds.
- Next, add milk powder and quickly stir it together to avoid any lumps.
- Now, add sugar and mix it well. Stir it for around 2 to 3 minutes until the mixture starts to thicken.
- Add cardamom powder and continue to stir for another 2 mins. The peda mixture will thicken and start to form a soft dough like consistency.
- Take it off heat and allow it to cool for 2 minutes.
How to form Peda
There are 2 ways to form a peda.
- The traditional way to form a peda is to take a small amount of peda and roll it into a ball with your palms. Next, press it and shape it into a flat circle. Place your thumb in the center of the peda and make an indent. Place a piece of pistachio in the indent.
- The second method is something I came up with because I wanted a quick way to finish making peda. I am a perfectionist, so I need my pedas to not only look good, but also look uniform. For this method you will need a silicone mold (see picture below). Just place a small amount of peda dough in the cavity of the mold, press it all in firmly, and then remove it. You will have beautiful looking pedas in seconds.
- Remove and serve. You can also store the pedas in a container and keep it for two days. In the refrigerator you can store for approx 6 days.
I used this silicone candy mold because of the detailed ridges on the sides. This one is from Walmart. It is about 1 1/2″ in diameter and has about 1/2 cm of depth. This mold is perfect for peda.
If you cannot find this mold, you can also check out other molds on Amazon. You can search for silicone candy or chocolate molds. See below some pictures of the molds that you can use to make a peda. These molds are inexpensive and can be used over and over for various other recipes.
