Microwave Peda Modak is a sweet made with milk powder and condensed milk and recognized for it’s distinct tear drop shape. I make this modak specifically for the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi which falls either in late August or early September each year.

Ganesh Chaturthi is a day where we worship Lord Ganesh. You can read more about it in my previous post over here.
To celebrate this festival I made this peda modak. I named it microwave peda modak because; it is made in microwave instead of stovetop. Lord Ganesh is known to love sweets, especially modak, so I make this every year as prasad (offering) to him.
Recipes for Modak
Modaks can be made different ingredients.
- The most common modak is made with rice flour. It is steamed rice dumpling stuffed with coconut and jaggery filling and known as Ukadiche Modak
- Another type of modak is made with either all-purpose flour or whole flour with coconut and jaggery filling which in turn is deep fried.
- The last method which is non-traditional is the modak made with milk powder and condensed milk which is also known as Mawa Modak
The Shape of the Modak is very Distinct
As much as it is about the recipe, modak is also about the shape. This sweet is easily recognizable because it is shaped like a water or tear drop. They remind me of Hershey’s Kisses. I am sure if you look at the picture you will agree with me.
This recipe for Microwave Peda Modak is simple, easy and no-frills recipe, and I can vouch for a fact that it tastes every bit like the peda we find in India. Enjoy!
Where to Buy Modak Mold From
Modak molds are available in Indian stores as well as online on Amazon. You can click below to make a purchase. The molds are available in aluminum as well as plastic and in different sizes. I prefer to use the smallest size for this particular recipe.
Ingredients for Mawa Modak
3 cups of Instant Dry Milk Powder
1 can condensed milk
4 tbsp melted butter or ghee
1 tbsp cardamom powder
Instructions to Make Modak Mixture
- Combine and mix the condensed milk and butter in a microwavable mixing bowl, and heat it in the microwave for a minute.
- Add the milk powder and cardamom powder to the bowl. Mix all the contents properly.
- Heat it in the microwave for a minute. Remove and stir it with spoon. Repeat this another four times.
- Make sure to stir it properly each time.
- Set it aside to cool for 7 minutes. Remember the mixture should still be warm. If it cools down too much, it will thicken and you will not be able to work with it.
Step to Make the Modak Peda
- Grease the inside of the silver modak mold with some melted butter.
- Take a spoonful of the above mixture and stuff it inside the mold. Close it properly and hold for a second.
- Carefully open the mold very gently.
- Remove the modak from the mold and place it on a serving tray. Repeat this process until all of the mixture has been used.
I have a friends who have made this recipe and loved it. If you have made this do let me know in the comments how it turned out. I always like to hear from my readers.
