Extra Virgin Olive Oil is one of my favorite kind of oils and I love using it as a dip with some rustic bread. I recently received a kit of European Extra Virgin Olive Oil to spread their Flavor Your Life Campaign. This kit included a sample of European Extra Virgin Olive Oil, a ceramic dish to serve the oil and some handy recipes cards.
For those not familiar with the Flavor your Life Campaign, you should know that it aims to educate and provide US customers with latest news regarding European Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO). It is supported by the European Union, Unaprol and the Italian Ministry of Agriculture. They aim to spread awareness about all European extra virgin olive oil. Before I start my review, please take a moment to read up on some facts about EVOO.
Here are Some Interesting Facts About European Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Extra virgin olive oil is extracted by cold pressed method. It means the freshly pressed juice is pressed without any heat or chemical.
- Farmers across Europe have valued olive trees. Over thousands of years they have cultivated over hundreds of varieties of olives trees. They have improvised the farming techniques to harvest olives for regions with distinctive environmental conditions and terrains to produce the best yields.
- The olive tree is differs region wise (climate and soil condition) and the time it is harvested. Since Europe is so diverse in terms of land, environment and climate, the yields of olive oil offers a flavorful diversity.
- Olives which are harvested in August (depending on the region) are under-ripe olives with greener, bitter and more pungent taste.
- Olives harvested in late November and December (again depending on the region) are over-ripe and tend to taste mild and buttery.
- Olive oil also differ in flavor. Spanish oil is golden yellow with fruity, nutty flavor. Italian olive oil is often dark green and has an herbal aroma and grassy flavor. Greek olive oil is green has a strong flavor and aroma. Lastly the French olive oil is pale in color with mild flavor.
- EVOO has a high smoking point of 400°F which is perfect for cooking and enhancing any dish by drizzling or garnishing it.
- It has to be stored in cool dark place away from heat and light to prevent decay. To ensure freshness, it should be consumed with 6 months.
I personally like to serve it as a dip with some rustic country or Italian bread. Before serving I top it off with a pinch of red chili powder or chili flakes and that is it. In fact it is our go to snack option for our Friday Family Movie Night.
The sample of extra virgin olive oil that I received with this kit, is the kind I like a lot. It was greenish/yellow in color with a bitter flavor. It went well with the french baguette that my husband had bought earlier. I bet it would taste great as a garnish on hummus. I wish I had more of this olive oil. I could have used to try out some of the recipes from the cards they included with this kit.

There is definitely a difference in olive oils depending on where the olives are grown. It is kind of like Jersey tomatoes, I love all tomatoes but when my mom visits from NJ during the summer months I ask her to bring tomatoes from one of the farm stand in her area. I do not know if it is the soil, the water or the environment, but they definitely taste better.
