Since we moved to our house five years back, my DH wanted me to start a vegetable garden. I was not very thrilled about the idea. I don’t deal very well with bugs, insects, pests or any other kinds of creepy crawlies. I don’t mind planting flowers, but dealing with a vegetable patch is a huge no for me.
So finally, my DH decided he would start a vegetable garden on his own. When TEE and S heard this, they enthusiastically offered to help. I decided I would help with the watering and photographing and nothing else. This is probably the first time in my life I did not dive head on towards this project and I blame the creepy crawlies for that.
Last week my DH and I we headed over to our local Home Depot and got only five plants. During the weekend he and the girls set out to plant them. He had already prepared a small patch behind our deck.
S wanted to dig the holes and even though her dad explained to her that it is tough, she persisted. So he handed her the shovel and after a few hits and a big enough hole she gave up stating, “It is hard work”.
TEE on the other hand was smart. She decided she would supervise her dad and tell him where to position the plants.
Half an hour later, they were done and I went ahead and took some pictures. Like I said, it is a pretty small patch and we only planted five vegetables (tomato, sweet pepper, hot pepper, zucchini, and eggplant). Even though I was not very enthusiastic about the vegetable garden, I am very curious to see how it turns out.
In the meantime I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping to have a positive update.

We used to have something like this in our old home. Maybe we should try making another one today.

I’m pretty sure I’d like the supervisory role too. I’d also enjoy the spoils of the garden. What a fun activity for everyone.

This will be so much fun for your girls and I have a feeling you will love it too. I can’t wait to see follow up pictures of how beautiful your plants are. I love eggplant so I am wondering how they will grow.

I have been dying to do a vegetable garden. I plan to start one soon

I so wish we had the yard to do our own garden. I think this is such a great learning experience for you kids! I can’t wait to see how it progresses!

Great job! We’re working on ours. Thanks for the inspiration!

don’t they make stuff to help keep bugs away and out of the garden? I hope you have some luck with your little garden and that it will grow to product lot’s of veggies for your family and help save you a bit of money.

I’m glad that it’s finally summer, starting a vegetable is the perfect thing to do during this season. Update us on how it turns out in the end.

I really want to have my own veggie garden, too! I just need a backyard first, haha. It’s hard to have one at a condo…
Pam
We love our vegetable garden, but there are definitely some creepy crawlies out there in it!
Triplezmom
We just started ours also. I mean, the husband and kids did!

I haven’t put in a vegetable garden in years. It did require some care but the results were well worth it. The fresh tomatoes were so good.

aw what a great garden and a wonderful family project.

Sometimes the things we are least enthused about end up capturing our attention most. I think it’s going to be awesome when you get to use your own veggies for cooking. 🙂

Nice! I only have tomatoes, potatoes and pineapples growing right now. One day I’ll have LOTS more!

Once the garden starts to make veggies for you, you’ll forget about the bugs!! Nothing tastes better than eating the food you grew from your own garden.

Good job! We have a small garden we tend to also. Hoping the recent freeze didn’t kill everything!

Water them nicely and keep posting pictures. When I will see the pictures of nice big vegetables, I will come with my basket to pick them up. 🙂 There is nothing better than home grown fresh vegetables.

Be sure to let us know how it turns out. I hardly have any sunlight in my yard, so we don’t have a garden, although I would love one.

I can not wait until we get a house where I am able to plant a garden. I am so jealous of your little garden – I am not allowed to plant anything in our rental.
Danielle
I have been wanting to start my veggie garden. I keep saying I am going to start tomorrow and I haven’t started it yet. I think I will get on it soon. You will have to show us the progress of your garden.
Terry
LOL… I have to laugh because you don’t want to deal with the creepy crawlies. You just wait until you taste your first home grown tomato that you grow yourself…or your daughter grows.
