During our stay in Minneapolis (we were there for TEE choir conference), we decided to check out Hell’s Kitchen located at Nicolette Mall. This restaurant was about two blocks away from our hotel and the teachers decided to check it out for breakfast.
The minute I saw the name, I immediately thought of Gordon Ramsey’s show Hell’s Kitchen. I also remember another namesake restaurant in New York City. I later found out there was no connection between either of these entities.
As we entered we were not sure what we were going to find. The location of the restaurant was in the underground basement, and as we made our way we were greeted with some amusing words “The road to hell is paved to good intentions”.
We were a group of almost 11 (kids, teachers and parents) and we did not have reservations. Upon checking in we were told that we would have a 10 – 20 minutes wait. When one of the teachers informed the host that the kids needed to get to the rehearsal in about 1/2 hour, he was very helpful.
He asked us to wait in the waiting room while he made sure our table was ready inside. As you can see most of the decor was really reminiscent of what hell would be like. It looked more like a fun hell than the punishing kind. The decor was red, dark and sombre. My favorite color is red, so I personally did not find it so shocking or scary.
I loved this chandelier the best with all the spoons, forks and knives dangling from it. I felt the urge to get one for my kitchen.
They had many unique artworks up on the wall. This one was my favorite (don’t ask me why).
Finally after being seated our server/waitress came over and introduced herself. She was the only thing that I did not like about the whole experience. She looked like she was annoyed to serve our table. I wanted to give her the benefit of doubt because after all we were a big group. However, when she refused to hand our separate checks, our group was not happy. As for the menu, they had breakfast items were pretty pricey. I ordered cornmeal waffle with berries and one egg on the side which was absolutely delicious.
Because we enjoyed our breakfast so much in Hell’s Kitchen that day, we decided to go for a dinner and desert on our last day in MN. After the concert was over we headed over to Hell’s Kitchen just before their closing time. They decided to keep the restaurant open for our group which was sweet of them. This time we had a great server, and service was quick and efficient. We had some more awesome, delicious food and dessert (I was too hungry to take pictures of) and headed back to our hotel.
I have to say it was a pleasant experience. Hopefully someday I will be able to return there again. Oh did I mention they had Kangaroo steak on their dinner menu.

Very interesting concept for sure. Although, there certainly is no “fun kind” of hell and probably no food there either! They did a great job with the decor and making it “feel” like you might imagine it would look.

Isn’t it awesome when a restaurant is so good that you end up there twice in one day? If I am ever in the area, I will definitley check it out.
