This week is Diwali our Festival of Lights. If you have read my previous post you will know how important this holiday is for us. Since it is a Festival of Lights, it has been a centuries old tradition to light Diyas in and around our homes. Diyas are small clay pots which are used to light an oil lamp. These days however, you can get all kinds of diyas including electric ones.
On my recent trip to our local Crate and Barrel I came across some cute ceramic cake pedestal. They were available in different colors, however they were plain. The shapes reminded me of our traditional diyas so that I decided to purchase them.

Once I brought them home, I had the idea to make the printed ceramic diyas. At first I thought I would paint some designs on it, but when I went to Michael’s I found these Craftsmart permanent markers. Although I never used them before, I knew they would work really well with the idea I had. So I bought three different colors: white, gold and black.
So with the help of ‘S’ I used the markers to draw some free hand designs and transformed them into these cute little diyas. I loved how they turned out. Believe it or not, I went and got some more cake pedestals from Crate and Barrel (they should thank me for my business). Check out the pictures below. I am so excited and cannot wait to use them tomorrow.
For this yellow one I found out white marker was more effective than black. The black one was too intense. After I was done drawing the designs, I finished off by gluing silver crystals, which was suggested to me by ‘S’. She wanted more bling and I had to oblige. After all it is Diwali. You can never have enough bling. The flashier the better.
For the red and orange, I decided to use the gold marker. I wanted the look to be very traditional and I think I made the right choice.
These markers are great. They dry instantly. Although they are permanent, you can scrap them off after they are dry. That way if you don’t have to worry if you make any mistakes.
So tomorrow I will be using them with some candles or even with some battery operated tea lights. Happy Diwali Everyone!
These bowls are absolutely beautiful! What a wonderful tradition
I’m loving the vibrant colors in those plates. Looks like a really fun diy!
How cool! I love how easy it is to spruce up a bowl or even plate! Festive just perfect for the holidays
They are so pretty – you have such an artistic talent. x
From one of my friend living there, I just know that Diwali is one grand festival celebrated all over India & the first thing that comes to my mind are fireworks & sweets. These Ceramic Diyas looks absolutely beautiful & a creative output as well indeed.
You really showed us your creative side, Babita! These came out really pretty. I wish it would keep forever. Hope you enjoy your holidays.
Gorgeous! Your hand painting is beautiful. I don’t even know what mine would turn out like.
Those are so gorgeous! I love how they turned oout!
Those are really awesome. I love the colors for sure!
Wow these are truly beautiful. You must be a super crafty lady! Love these.
Those are absolutely gorgeous I am stunned that you sis that by hand!
Oh these are beautifully designed. You guys did awesome on them! The crystals were a nice touch!
These little dishes are so cute. It’s too bad about the paint scratching off but I bet you can spray sealant of some sort on it to preserve the paint. I’m normally not a yellow person but I love it paired with white.
They turned out so beautiful! I love the creative drawings you did on each!
Babita, you are very creative! It looks very nice!
You are so creative. I love how they turned out.
Okay, those are seriously gorgeous. You made it look so easy to do!
Beautifull… I agree being Diwali you definitely need some blings on the diya. They have turned out very nice
WOW Babs, you did an amazing job with these. I would never have known that was a free hand design until you mentioned it. I think Crate and Barrel should thank you for their business and now I want you to make some for me too. 🙂
Wow, Babita! Those came out AWESOME. It’s a little bit of a bummer that the markers can scrape off after all your hard work. I hope it lasts for a really long time.
