Although I was born and brought up in Mumbai (Bombay), India my parents grew up in Mangalore. It is a coastal town in Southern part of India famous for rice paddies and coconut groves. So it is natural that almost everything we cook uses rice and coconut in some form or the other.
Since I cook Indian food almost everyday. I tend to use coconut to make some of our most wonderful Mangalorean curries. I also use rice to make breakfast items like Dosa (rice and lentil crepe) or Idlis (steamed rice cakes). Why am I telling you all this? It is because to make these recipes I need a heavy duty blender. Actually blender is not even the word I am going to use. I need a heavy-duty grinder (like they call in India).
Now if you have ever tried to grind coconut or pulverize rice, you will know it is not easy to get it to a fine and creamy texture. Over the years I tried different types of blenders and was never satisfied with the results. In one case the blender jar even broke on me. It was very frustrating to cook my kind of food. Eventually within the first five years of living here in the States, I opted to bring a heavy-duty counter top blender/grinder from India.
I have been using the Indian grinder for almost 10 years now, but I know I may have to replace it soon. So I have been on the lookout for an heavy duty blender/grinder which is reasonably priced and can satisfy all of my cooking needs. Fortunately for me I recently received a Ninja Ultima Dual Stage Blender to try out. I was, and am thrilled at the opportunity. I had heard great things about this blender. I also had the opportunity to try out some of the blended shakes samples the Ninja team were handing out during BlogHer conference in NYC back in July.
So in the coming weeks I will be using the Ninja Ultima to try out some of the toughest Indian recipes and see how this blender/grinder performs. I hope you stick around to check out my posts detailing my experience.
Disclosure: I received this product complimentary. All opinions here are honest and my own.
