About the Recipe
This recipe for this Low-Carb Black Bean and Chickpea Burger is something that I came up with because I wanted to have a vegetarian option for days when my family and I don’t eat non-vegetarian food.
As I researched online, I found veggie options, but I did not like them. So I picked out a basic recipe, then played around with ingredients and flavoring, and came up with this recipe for a bean burger. I have to say I was skeptical, but the Black Bean – Chickpea burger turned out great. It was soft, dense, hearty, and very comforting. Even my girls enjoyed it.
Ingredients Notes and Substitutions
Black bean & Chickpeas: I use canned black beans. Even though I am not a fan of canned products, I don’t mind using canned black beans. I discard the canned liquid and rinse the beans well under running water. I used canned beans because it is convenient and saves time.
Red Chili Flakes: to spice up the burger and add some heat, I use red chili flakes. However, you can use chopped jalapenos or Indian green chilies for this recipe.
Garlic, Onion and Cumin powder: these are the ingredients l use for flavoring the bean burger.
Bread crumbs & quick oats: these ingredients help to bind the bean mixture and add a slightly chewy texture to the burger. My favorite bread crumbs to use is the Panko bread crumbs. They add a layer of texture to the patties.
Other Ingredients: include oil for the mix as well as frying. Salt you have to add as per your taste.
Ingredients for the Burger: Kaiser Roll or Burger bun, lettuce leaves, slice of onion, tomato and pickled jalapenos.
Condiments: I like to use ketchup and Kewpie Mayo. You can also add some sriracha sauce to mayo and make your own spicy mayonnaise.

Baking Instructions for Black Bean and Chickpea Patty
If you don’t want to shallow fry the patties, you can bake them. I personally like the texture of shallow fried patty and it is quicker to make too. However, if you want an healthier option, baking is perfect for you. The outside of the bean patty will be crisp, while the inside will be soft.
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
- Line a baking pan with parchment paper. Oil the parchment paper with a brush or spray cooking oil.
- Place the patty on the baking pan. Spray a coat of oil on top of the patty or apply oil lightly with a brush.
- Bake for 12 minutes.
- Flip over. Apply or spray some oil again on the patty. Bake this for another 12 minutes.
- Remove from oven. Let is rest for a minute and it is ready to be served.
Instructions to Layer or Stack the Black Bean and Chickpea Burger
- Cut the bun into half. Spread some mayo on the bottom part of the bun.
- Place a bean patty over it.
- Top the patty with some lettuce, slice of onion, tomato and couple of pickled jalapenos (optional).

About Kewpie Mayo
See below images of kewpie mayo. It is a Japanese mayonnaise that is creamier than regular mayo. It has Msg in it. I also taste a hint of mustard.
Pam
Love this recipe. Can you give me the instructions on how to bake these burgers.
BabsProjects
Hi Pam, I update the post. Please check it out. Thank you.
Janice Hirst
I made these for dinner tonight. They were delicious! Mine were crumbly though and didn’t hold together well. How much oil did you add to the mixture?
BabsProjects
Thank you Janice for your feedback. I updated the recipe card with the measurement for oil. In the mixture you have to use 3 tbsp of oil. Also make sure to use your hands to mix all the ingredients. This will allow you to crush and squeeze all the ingredients while you mix them.

Hi Pam, I used canola oil in the mixture as well as for frying. You can use vegetable oil as well.

Chrystal @ YUM eating
I have been searching for a black bean and chickpea burger recipe.
I am curious though, when you say low carb or no carbs do you mean sugars and bad carbs with no nutritional value, say like white pasta and the bread? Because black beans (13 c – 6 fiber= 7 net) and chickpeas (37 c – 8 fiber= 29 net carbs) do have carbohydrates.
I’m just wondering what sort of low carb / no carb plan you are following. I’m interested in hearing more about it.
BabsProjects
Chrystal, I am aware that beans have carbohydrates, but as per my understanding these are the good carbs. When I said I did a no-carb diet, I avoided all sugars, bad carbs and processed food. Let me know if you need any more information.
Pam
I love black bean burgers, but I haven’t ever made my own. I need to try this recipe!
