Vow! I never thought I would ever see an Indian rickshaw in New York City. Maybe it could soon be a reality if fashion retailer Anthropologie has their way. They are offering for sale a limited edition Indian inspired rickshaw. They have taken this humble means of transport of the masses and imported it to the land of excess.
This green and red rickshaw is completely blinged out in local Indian goodness. It has been fitted with collapsible kantha-fabric canopy with batik designs, handlebar streamers, a bell for jaywalking New Yorkers and a headlight that lights up when you start pedaling. In addition to all the bells and beads this rickshaw also bears an authentic hindi phrase (Phool bane angare) which I found a bit amusing. Isn’t that also a name of a hindi (Bollywood) movie?
While I appreciate Anthropologie for bringing to us one of a kind, quirky, exotic, foreign, artisan kinds of goods and give points for their efforts to boost local talents, they are also infamous for their ridiculous prices. This rickshaw has a retail price of $2,200 with an additional price of $300 for shipping and handling.
