About the Recipe
Dalgona Candy is made by melting sugar and adding some baking soda. It is a popular toffee or caramel kind of candy that is sold by street vendors in Korea. It is very popular among children who can eat the candy as is or try to break it into shapes.
Dalgona Candy is also known as the Korean sugar honeycomb candy. It is a hard candy that you can suck on like a lollipop.
I am a huge fan of Korean dramas. Yesterday when I was watching the 2nd episode of Squid Game on Netflix, I saw the characters being offered the challenge to make this candy and get the desired shape right. If they were unable to do it within a particular time frame, or if your candy broke, then they were killed. I know it is a violent premise, but I found the candy challenge interesting.
Anyway, that particular episode of Squid Game inspired me to make dalgona candy. Surprisingly, the candy turned out perfect on my first try itself.
If you read below, I will show you all the tips and tricks to make the perfect dalgona candy.
Ingredients for Dalgona Candy
Like I mentioned above, there are only 2 ingredients required for this candy recipe; sugar, and baking soda (See the recipe page below for more info).
Utensils/Tools for Making Dalgona Candy
- Long handle stainless steel ladle. If you don’t have that, you can use a small frying pan.
- Chopstick or wooden spoon for stirring.
- Favorite cookie cutter(s)
- Bowl with a flat bottom. In Korea, street vendors use hotteok press. However, I used a stainless steel bowl with a 3″ diameter.
- A baking pan or flat surface layered with parchment paper. I used a marble cutting board and instead of parchment paper, I lightly greased the marble board with some oil.
How to Make Dalgona Candy (keep everything ready before you start making it)
- Heat pan or ladle. Add sugar and stir it quickly with either a chopstick or spoon.
- As the sugar starts to melt, add baking soda and stir it until it is completely dissolved. The mixture will turn frothy with a light caramel color.
- Remove from heat and continue stirring it.
- Pour it over the flat surface or marble cutting board.
- Allow it to cool for a couple of seconds.
- Press the candy flat with the bottom of the bowl or a hotteok press.
- Next, press the desired shape with a cookie cutter
- Allow it to cool and lightly pry it with a spatula.
- You can serve it as is or you can break it into the shape you made.
- To break the candy into the shape you want, all you have to do is take a toothpick and run it along the outline of the shape carefully.
